Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has firmly denied reports suggesting he is considering defecting to support President William Ruto's reelection campaign. The denial came shortly after a meeting with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and other leaders from the Linda Mwananchi Movement at Kalonzo's Karen offices.

Kalonzo expressed frustration over what he described as President Ruto's desperation following widespread rejection by Kenyans. He reaffirmed the opposition's commitment to uniting against Ruto's presidency, emphasizing that turning back would betray national interests.

Opposition Unity Emphasized

Addressing the media, Kalonzo said:

  • "We are united in our goal to remove President Ruto from office."
  • "Multiple strategies will be employed to ensure victory against an opponent like Ruto."
  • "Any opposition leader engaging with Ruto risks fracturing the coalition and betraying the public's mandate."

He also clarified that he has not met President Ruto and dismissed rumors of an upcoming joint address with the Head of State. Kalonzo noted he had just returned from Zanzibar and reiterated his resolve to be the last man standing in the fight to oust Ruto.

Support from Opposition Figures

Senator Edwin Sifuna, MP Babu Owino, and other opposition lawmakers were present during the meeting. Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua also dismissed defection claims, calling them "deep fake" and reaffirming Kalonzo's steadfast role within the United Opposition.

Kalonzo compared the current political climate to the period before the 2002 general elections, warning opposition leaders against betraying public expectations, which could have political consequences.

Coalition Challenges and Reforms

The Wiper leader criticized the swift removal of Sifuna from his Deputy Minority Whip position, labeling it a conspiracy and vowing to protect the Azimio coalition's unity. Sifuna highlighted ongoing consultations aimed at strengthening democratic governance and presenting a united front in the 2027 polls.

Meanwhile, Kalonzo's camp accused the Ruto government of spreading false rumors to undermine his candidacy, as the President recently criticized opposition leaders for lacking clear policy proposals.
