Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has cast doubt on the legitimacy of the impeachment process against former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua following allegations that some lawmakers were bribed to back the motion.
Speaking at ACK St. Paul’s Cathedral in Embu on August 2, 2026, Kalonzo highlighted admissions from UDA MPs and senators who claimed they received bribes, describing the revelations as a serious constitutional and legal challenge.
He stated: "Recent admissions by UDA Members of Parliament and Senators that they were bribed to support the impeachment raise serious constitutional and legal questions regarding the integrity of the process." Kalonzo added that such disclosures undermine accountability in the proceedings.
Calls for Regional Unity
The Azimio la Umoja leader also addressed attempts to divide the Mt Kenya region politically, emphasizing the indivisibility of the GEMA community. He urged Kenyans to reject politics that deepen ethnic divisions.
Kalonzo further responded to questions about his political engagement, noting that while he may not always be visible locally, he is actively involved in regional and international discussions aimed at strengthening Kenya’s democracy ahead of the General Election.
He clarified former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s role within the opposition coalition, confirming that Uhuru remains Azimio la Umoja's chairman and continues to provide guidance despite stepping back from daily politics.
Bribery Claims in Impeachment Process
Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo revealed that some senators were offered financial inducements to support Gachagua’s impeachment. In a July 30 interview, Maanzo said he personally rejected a Ksh10 million bribe tied to his vote.
He recounted being told: "If you take this money, you must vote yes. If you take it and run away, you won’t get to your house. If you take it and vote no, you still won’t get to your house." He confirmed his decision to vote against the motion.
