The Kasarani-Mwiki road, a vital artery in Nairobi County connecting Roysambu roundabout to Njiru, is undergoing renovations under the Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) Infrastructure Project. This initiative aims to introduce dedicated footpaths and cycle tracks to enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
Kasarani MP Ronald Karauri explained that the project includes a 1.5-meter cabro-paved cycle track, a 2-meter footpath, traffic bollards to prevent motorized vehicles from encroaching, street lighting, shelters, benches, and signage along the route. These improvements target the thousands of residents and students who use the road daily.
However, many residents remain dissatisfied, pointing out that the road's fundamental issues—narrow lanes, potholes, and poor drainage—have not been addressed. In particular, areas near the Maternity zone suffer from blocked or nonexistent drainage, worsened by illegal structures built by furniture traders, leading to stagnant sewage.
Residents argue that while non-motorized transport infrastructure is welcome, the carriageway itself requires urgent repair and expansion to ease traffic flow and improve safety.
Responding to these concerns, MP Karauri assured that the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) will soon commence repairs on the road's carriageway, promising a comprehensive upgrade. The community hopes these plans will materialize effectively, addressing long-standing challenges on this busy corridor.
