The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has approved the final design for the new Nithi Bridge, marking a significant milestone in the Ksh7.5 billion project aimed at improving road safety along the busy Meru-Nairobi highway.
KeNHA Director General Luka Kimeli recently inspected the completed design and the proposed road alignment before authorizing the contractor to begin preliminary construction works.
Enhanced Safety and Improved Road Alignment
The redesigned bridge features a wider carriageway, smoother bends, and a safer road layout to replace the existing hazardous structure known for sharp bends and blind corners. This overhaul is expected to drastically reduce the risk of accidents, which have historically claimed numerous lives in the area.
KeNHA emphasized that the project aligns with its broader commitment to delivering quality infrastructure that enhances mobility, supports socio-economic development, and saves lives.
Early Entry Approval Accelerates Project Timeline
In a move to expedite construction, the National Land Commission (NLC) granted KeNHA an Early Entry Request, allowing access to required land parcels before the completion of land acquisition and compensation. This approval came after a joint sensitization meeting with affected landowners in Tharaka Nithi County.
KeNHA stated that this step ensures the project maintains its schedule without delays caused by pending compensation processes.
