The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a partial closure of Mombasa Road (A8) near the Highway Educational Complex close to Bellevue. The closure will start on August 10, 2026, and is expected to last until September 14, 2026.
This measure is necessary to facilitate the construction of a box culvert aimed at managing stormwater effectively, preventing erosion of the road structure, and addressing a natural drainage channel crossing the highway.
The affected section will have both lanes closed interchangeably rather than simultaneously, allowing some traffic flow throughout the construction period. Motorists are urged to use the remaining open lanes and cooperate with traffic marshals and police officers on site.
Impact on Traffic and Alternative Routes
The partial closure is likely to cause congestion as traffic diverts to nearby roads not designed for heavy volumes. Key alternative routes include:
- Likoni and Enterprise Roads to rejoin Mombasa Road near General Motors
- Southern Bypass near Ole Sereni
- Lang'ata Road and Raila Odinga Road for city-bound drivers from Mlolongo or JKIA
- Internal roads within South C such as Popo Road, Kapiti Road, and Muhoho Avenue (mainly for light vehicles)
Areas expected to experience increased traffic include South C, Nairobi West, Madaraka, and the stretch from Imara Daima to Capital Centre.
KeNHA has assured the public that normal traffic operations will resume once construction is complete.
