Kenya is actively pursuing innovative financing strategies to accelerate critical infrastructure developments amid increasing global competition for development funds and calls for reforming the international financial system.

During a recent visit to Beijing, Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir engaged with the Multilateral Cooperation Centre for Development Finance (MCDF) leadership to strengthen collaboration with multilateral financiers. Korir highlighted the importance of exploring alternative funding mechanisms that can help Kenya and other developing nations mobilise resources for vital projects.

Strengthening Partnerships for Infrastructure Growth

Korir met MCDF CEO Zhongjing Wang and the organisation's secretariat to discuss expanding cooperation in support of Kenya's long-term development goals. He expressed gratitude for MCDF's contribution of Sh300 million towards preparatory work on the Mau Summit-Malaba highway segment, a flagship project implemented through a public-private partnership (PPP).

The Mau Summit-Malaba road is a key component of Kenya’s plan to modernise transport infrastructure and enhance connectivity between major economic hubs and neighbouring countries. This corridor is crucial for facilitating trade along the Northern Corridor, linking the Port of Mombasa to inland regions and East African neighbours.

Regional Learning Centre to Build Financing Capacity

Korir also welcomed plans to establish an MCDF regional learning centre in Nairobi. This facility aims to enhance Kenya and Africa’s capacity in development finance, promoting knowledge exchange and expertise in innovative funding approaches to close infrastructure financing gaps.

The centre is expected to reinforce Nairobi’s status as a continental hub for development cooperation and financial expertise.

Focus on Sustainable Financing Models

Kenya continues to diversify its funding sources for major projects, increasingly leveraging PPPs and alternative financing to manage public expenditure pressures. The engagement with MCDF aligns with Kenya’s broader strategy to secure sustainable finance and technical support essential for the nation’s economic transformation.
