The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has launched an inquiry into the unlawful felling of 350 young trees within the Makunga forest block, part of the Mount Elgon ecosystem.
The incident occurred overnight at the Saboti Forest Station, with the felled trees left scattered on the ground. KFS suspects the act was deliberately orchestrated by a few individuals aiming to provoke local communities.
Contrary to some reports, the Shikhendu forest block was not impacted by this illegal activity, confirmed the Service.
In response, KFS has intensified protection and security efforts in the affected area to prevent further destruction. Those identified as responsible will face arrest and prosecution under the Forest Conservation and Management Act (Amendment) 2026.
The Service has urged the public to provide any information that could assist in apprehending the perpetrators. Reports can be made to the Saboti Foresters office, the County Forest Conservator in Trans Nzoia, or the nearest police station.
