Kenya has officially inaugurated a Consulate General in Guangzhou, China, aimed at strengthening economic diplomacy and enhancing support for Kenyans living in southern China.
The new mission, opened by Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing'oei, will oversee Kenya's diplomatic interests in Guangdong, Fujian, Hainan provinces, and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region—key industrial and commercial hubs in China.
Strategic Economic Engagement
Speaking at the inauguration, Sing'oei emphasized that the consulate aligns with Kenya's goal to leverage foreign missions as catalysts for economic growth. The consulate will facilitate trade and investment, serving as a gateway to one of China's most dynamic economic regions.
Consular Services Closer to Kenyans
Previously, Kenyans in southern China had to travel to the embassy in Beijing for services like passport renewals and emergency assistance. The Guangzhou consulate will now provide these services locally, easing access for Kenyans living, studying, and working in the area.
Supporting Business and Diaspora
- The consulate will support Kenyan exporters, importers, and investors by providing institutional backing and fostering partnerships with Chinese companies.
- It will also serve Chinese investors interested in opportunities in Kenya.
- The presence of a sizeable African business community in Guangzhou makes the consulate an important hub for trade facilitation.
Kenya's Ambassador to China, Willy Bett, Consul General James Muhati, and officials from Guangdong's provincial government attended the ceremony alongside business leaders and members of the Kenyan community.
The establishment of the Guangzhou consulate comes amid deepening Kenya-China relations, with China being a major trade partner and investor in Kenya's infrastructure and industrial development.
Sing'oei reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring diplomatic missions contribute directly to national development by promoting trade, investment, and efficient service delivery for Kenyans abroad.
