The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a forecast predicting predominantly dry weather across most parts of the country from August 4 to August 10, 2026.

While dry conditions will prevail in many regions, some areas in Western Kenya and the Rift Valley counties—including Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Kakamega, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Kericho, Nyandarua, Nyeri, and Murang'a—are expected to receive rainfall during this period.

Intermittent cool and cloudy weather is also anticipated in select counties such as Embu, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Laikipia, Meru, Murang'a, Nairobi, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Tharaka Nithi, Nakuru, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, Marsabit, and Wajir.

Daytime temperatures will generally be high, with maximums surpassing 30°C in parts of Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu, Garissa, Wajir, Isiolo, Marsabit, and Turkana. Conversely, residents in the Central Highlands, Rift Valley, and southern Kenya should prepare for chilly nights, with night-time temperatures dropping below 10°C in counties such as Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Nyeri, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nakuru, Narok, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta.

Monthly Outlook and Regional Variations

The department’s monthly forecast indicates that August will mostly be sunny and dry across Kenya, although some Central Highlands counties will continue to experience occasional light rain and cool conditions.

Temperature ranges for the month are expected to vary widely, with daytime highs between 16°C and 37°C and night-time lows from 5°C to 26°C, depending on the region. The hottest weather is forecast in northern and northeastern areas, while the coldest nights will occur in the Central Highlands, including Nairobi and Nyandarua.

Despite the typical August cool spells, mean temperatures nationwide are projected to remain above average. Isolated heavy rainfall is possible in some counties, although overall rainfall is expected to be near or below average.

Counties with Expected Rainfall and Dry Conditions

  • Near-average to below-average rainfall is anticipated in parts of Trans Nzoia, Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Siaya, Vihiga, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Kisumu, Kericho, Nyamira, Kisii, Bomet, Migori, Homa Bay, Narok, and coastal counties including Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, Kwale, and parts of Tana River.
  • Below-average rainfall is expected in Turkana, Samburu, parts of West Pokot, and Baringo.
  • Marsabit, Wajir, Mandera, Isiolo, Garissa, Taita Taveta, Kajiado, and some areas of Narok and Tana River will mostly experience sunny and dry weather.

Residents in Nairobi and neighboring highland counties should continue preparing for cold mornings typical of August.

Kennedy Thiong'o, Deputy Director and Senior Meteorologist at the Kenya Meteorological Department, emphasized that despite the cooler spells, temperatures will generally be warmer than average this month.
