The Kenya Navy successfully rescued 41 individuals after a cargo dhow began taking on water off the Shimoni coast on August 3, 2026.

The vessel, named SIRI YA MAFANIKIO, was en route from Shimoni to Pemba when it started sinking approximately three kilometres off Mpunguti ya Juu Island. On board were 11 crew members and 30 passengers from Kenya and Tanzania.

Following a distress call from the dhow's captain relayed through the Shimoni Beach Management Unit (BMU), the Special Boats Unit (SBU) of the Kenya Navy promptly deployed a patrol boat to conduct a maritime rescue operation.

Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) confirmed that all 41 people were evacuated safely before the vessel fully sank. The dhow was subsequently towed back to Shimoni Port.

One individual sustained minor injuries and was taken to Qatar Medical Centre in Shimoni for treatment.
