Kenya’s Harambee Starlets were eliminated from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) following a 2-0 defeat to Algeria in their final Group A match at Rabat’s Olympic Stadium on Monday.

After opening the tournament with losses to Morocco (4-0) and Senegal (1-0), Kenya needed a win to keep their qualification hopes alive. Despite improved defensive organisation, the Starlets struggled to break down a disciplined Algerian side.

The North Africans took the lead in the 14th minute when captain Marine Dafeur curled a precise free kick beyond Kenyan goalkeeper Lilian Awuor. Nine minutes later, Algeria doubled their advantage through Lynda Bendris, who capitalised on a defensive error by Elizabeth Ochaka.

Kenya threatened before halftime, with Martha Emedot narrowly missing a long-range effort. Algeria nearly extended their lead in the 37th minute with a close header from Morgane Ikene.

In the second half, Kenya controlled possession and showed improved midfield composure but were limited to few clear chances by Algeria’s organised defence. Captain Mwanalima Jereko had the best opportunity late in the game, sending a low shot just wide after skillfully controlling the ball inside the box. Earlier, Emedot was denied in a one-on-one by Algerian goalkeeper Chloé Yamina N'Gazi.

Algeria managed the remainder of the match effectively to secure second place in Group A and a quarter-final spot. Kenya concluded the tournament with three losses and no points.
