Kenya has dispatched a 23-athlete squad to the 21st World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, aiming to build on past achievements and develop future Olympic contenders.

The event, running from August 5 to 9, features 12 male and 11 female athletes representing the nation. Kenya seeks to surpass its previous tally of seven medals—three gold, three silver, and one bronze—earned in the last edition where it placed fifth overall.

Long-Term Olympic Vision

Athletics Kenya Youth Development Director Barnaba Korir emphasizes that the championships are part of a broader strategy to groom these young talents for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games and ultimately the 2032 Olympics, when many of the athletes are expected to peak.

Korir stated, “This is a very young team. While a few may break into senior World Championship ranks soon, our main goal is to prepare as many athletes as possible for 2028 and especially 2032, when they can truly shine as champions.”

Team Morale and Preparation

Korir expressed confidence in the team’s readiness, highlighting positive interactions with athletes and coaches. He noted that although winning medals is desirable, the experience gained on the global stage is invaluable for athlete development.

“After open discussions, the athletes have shown great confidence and are committed to performing at their best. The coaching staff is also satisfied with the training leading up to the championships,” Korir added.

Continuing Kenya’s Legacy

Kenya aims to maintain its strong tradition in distance running through this new generation, ensuring the country remains a dominant force in athletics for years to come.
