Kenya has been elected to the council of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) for the 2027-2030 term, announced Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’Oei during the 31st ISA Assembly session in Kingston, Jamaica.
PS Sing’Oei highlighted that the election demonstrates global confidence in Kenya’s dedication to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), rule-based ocean governance, and sustainable stewardship of marine resources.
He noted that Kenya’s role on the ISA council will further the country’s efforts in advancing maritime scientific research and promoting equitable management of the world’s oceans as a common heritage of humankind.
"This election is a testament to Kenya’s longstanding commitment to UNCLOS and sustainable ocean management," PS Sing’Oei said, emphasizing Kenya’s intent to use its position to foster international cooperation on ocean governance.
Kenya also pledged to work closely with ISA member states to implement key outcomes from the Nairobi Sustainable Blue Economy Conference and the 11th Our Ocean Conference held in Mombasa, the first such global conference hosted in Africa.
The International Seabed Authority, established under the 1982 UNCLOS treaty, regulates mineral-related activities in international seabed areas beyond national jurisdiction. It currently includes 172 members, comprising 171 countries and the European Union.
