John Mtongoi, a distinguished Kenyan university graduate, has been awarded the highly competitive Mastercard Foundation Scholarship to study for a Master of Applied Science at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver.

This achievement comes after Mtongoi faced initial rejection from UBC’s Master’s programme just a year prior. Despite this setback, he persevered and triumphed over more than 11,000 applicants to secure one of only 42 scholarships granted to Mastercard Foundation Scholars at the university.

Academic Focus and Ambition

Mtongoi’s academic interests lie in sustainable construction, inspired by innovative methods such as mass timber construction—an eco-friendly building technique that significantly reduces carbon emissions. This passion directed his choice to join UBC’s Sustainable Built Environment Lab, renowned for research in environmentally responsible infrastructure.

Support System and Resilience

Throughout his journey, Mtongoi credited his success to the unwavering support from his academic mentors and family. Three key recommenders provided strong endorsements for his applications, while his twin sister and close friends offered emotional encouragement during challenging times.

He adopted a mindset of viewing each rejection as a “Next Opportunity,” which helped him maintain focus and determination throughout multiple application cycles.

Significance of the Scholarship

  • UBC hosts over 16,000 international students, with just 42 Mastercard Foundation Scholars.
  • Mtongoi is among only two thesis-based scholars awarded this prestigious scholarship.

This scholarship not only recognises academic excellence but also supports promising African students committed to making impactful contributions in their fields.

John Mtongoi’s story is a testament to resilience and the power of steadfast support networks in achieving academic and personal goals.
