Mombasa’s hospitality sector is experiencing a notable shift as a rising number of Kenyan travellers help sustain hotel occupancy throughout the year. This trend is reducing the traditional dependence on international tourists and peak holiday periods.

At Bamburi Beach Hotel, domestic guests now represent a significant share of visitors. These include families on beach holidays, corporate groups attending meetings and conferences, and diaspora members reconnecting with their roots.

Changing Tourism Patterns

Sales and Marketing Manager Margaret Masha highlighted that domestic tourism is no longer limited to leisure. Corporate events such as meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) have become key drivers of year-round visitation.

"We remain active throughout the year without a defined low season, thanks to nationals visiting for both holidays and business," Masha said.

Food and Beverage Manager Joel Mwala emphasised that domestic tourism should offer memorable experiences that foster national pride and encourage further exploration within Kenya.

Broader Impact of Domestic Tourism

Recent statistics show domestic travellers accounted for over 5.15 million hotel bed-nights nationally, underscoring their growing importance.

Besides hotels, increased domestic travel benefits local economies by boosting demand for transport, food, shopping, and entertainment services. Masha noted the positive ripple effect on communities, including informal sector workers.

Appealing to Families and Diaspora

Kenyans living abroad also contribute to this trend by visiting Mombasa with their families. Lorah Rugendo from the UK praised the Coast for its family-friendly atmosphere, rich culture, and child-focused amenities.

"The experience has been perfect. I love the climate, the beach, and would recommend Mombasa as a great family destination," she said.

Outlook for Mombasa Tourism

While international tourists remain vital for foreign exchange, the growing domestic market provides a more consistent flow of visitors throughout the year. This diversification helps stabilize incomes for tourism workers and small businesses.

Industry leaders believe that collaboration among hotels and stakeholders is essential to capitalize on this trend and enhance the overall visitor experience.

Maintaining and expanding offerings that appeal to Kenyan families, corporate travellers, and the diaspora will be crucial for Mombasa’s tourism resilience.
