Kelly Muigai recently uncovered a nursery school fee receipt dating back to February 27, 1990, while sorting through her late mother’s belongings. The receipt showed a payment of KSh 150 for first-term fees at Nyeri Cathedral Nursery School.
Her mother passed away in 2001, making the receipt a poignant reminder of a routine errand from over three decades ago. The handwritten slip, carefully preserved among her mother’s papers, symbolises a tangible connection across time.
Muigai shared the discovery on LinkedIn, reflecting on how everyday objects can gain deep sentimental value because of the memories they evoke. She wrote, "36 years later, I am holding the receipt she once held."
She also posed a question to fellow Kenyans about the current cost of nursery school fees and whether such institutions still use the same terminology.
This find highlights not only the emotional bonds tied to family history but also prompts reflection on the evolving landscape of education expenses in Kenya.
