Kilifi County leaders have condemned circulating rumours that people’s genitals are mysteriously disappearing, linking these unfounded claims to recent violence, property destruction, and extortion attempts in the region.

Governor Gideon Mung’aro emphasized that there is no scientific or medical evidence supporting such claims. He urged security agencies to identify and act against those spreading these rumours, which he said are being used deliberately to sow fear and provoke community unrest.

"Medical examinations of alleged victims have confirmed that their genitals remain intact," Mung’aro stated. He called on residents to reject mob justice and instead report any suspicious incidents to the police for proper investigation.

Kilifi North MP Owen Baya highlighted how these rumours have been exploited by criminals to extort money from fearful residents. He recalled a case in Matsangoni where a man was attacked after being accused of genital theft and subsequently extorted for money.

Religious leaders have also spoken out against the rumours. Bishop Amos Lewa, chair of the Kilifi County Religious Council, described the claims as "scientifically impossible" unless physical harm occurs. He urged community figures to help differentiate genuine crimes from baseless accusations.

Recent incidents linked to these rumours have resulted in fatalities and significant property damage, raising concerns among local authorities. In one case, a man and his son were jailed after assaulting a woman they accused of causing genital disappearance.

Security officials reiterate the importance of reporting alleged crimes to law enforcement rather than resorting to violence. Leaders across Kilifi are calling for collaboration among religious groups, elders, residents, and security agencies to curb the spread of misinformation and prevent further unrest.

Governor Mung’aro warned that individuals who knowingly spread harmful rumours to incite violence will face legal consequences, and urged the public to remain calm while allowing authorities to handle investigations.
