Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has launched a campaign in Samburu County to rally support for President William Ruto’s re-election bid. Speaking during a large public gathering in Maralal, Kindiki emphasized the government’s commitment to development in the historically marginalized region.
He pointed to ongoing infrastructure projects, including the construction of tarmac roads linking key towns such as Maralal, Morijo, Baragoi, South Horr, and Loiyangalani, with plans to extend towards Ethiopia. Kindiki noted that these road projects mark a significant departure from previous administrations, which neglected Northern Kenya’s development needs.
Additional investments cited include the development of modern markets in Maralal, Baragoi, Serolipi, and Kirimon, aimed at boosting local trade and improving business environments. Kindiki also highlighted the Yamo Dam project, urging contractors to complete the water treatment plant without delay to ensure residents benefit fully.
Call for Unity and Continuation of Development Agenda
Kindiki welcomed political leaders who recently joined the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), urging them to work together to advance national development. He dismissed calls for President Ruto to serve only one term, arguing that such a move would disrupt ongoing projects in Samburu and other parts of Northern Kenya.
He condemned those promoting a “Ruto One Term” narrative, describing it as contrary to the interests of Samburu residents. Kindiki stressed that development should not be influenced by electoral politics or ethnic considerations, reminding leaders that the President represents all Kenyans regardless of how they voted.
Government’s Inclusive Development Approach
Kindiki underscored the Kenya Kwanza administration’s policy of distributing development fairly across all regions without discrimination. He cited road projects in other Northern counties, including Isiolo, Wajir, and Mandera, as evidence of the government’s broader commitment to uplift marginalized areas.
On political cooperation, Kindiki called for unity among parties supporting President Ruto, including those in the Broad-Based Government arrangement, and encouraged friendly competition in other elective positions. He also noted that political rivals can still contribute to governance after elections.
