The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has unveiled plans to construct an 18.9-kilometre road network around the Raila Odinga Talanta International Stadium and the Bomas International Convention Centre (BICC) in Nairobi.
This initiative aims to enhance traffic circulation and road capacity in the Dagoretti South, Kibra, and Lang’ata constituencies, where both facilities are located. The project is timely as the country gears up to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) starting June 19, 2027.
According to an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) report submitted to the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), the road network will improve access and traffic management around the stadium and the convention centre, which are expected to attract significant activity.
Environmental Considerations
The ESIA highlights potential environmental impacts, including:
- Clearing of vegetation
- Disturbance to wildlife habitats
- Increased noise and air pollution
- Waste generation
- Pressure on water resources during construction
To mitigate these effects, KURA has proposed several measures such as protecting unaffected trees, compensatory tree planting, site restoration, and collaboration with environmental agencies. Additionally, the project will enforce dust control, proper waste disposal, erosion prevention, and strict adherence to environmental regulations.

The project awaits NEMA's approval before commencement. The development is part of broader efforts to support infrastructure around key sporting and convention venues ahead of major events.
