The death toll from the tragic boat accident on Zimbabwe's Lake Kariba has increased to 69 following the recovery of 23 additional bodies on Saturday, August 15, 2026.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the updated figure in a statement on their official Facebook page, emphasizing that search operations remain active to locate others still missing.
The incident involved a Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA) boat that capsized on Tuesday, August 11. President Emmerson Mnangagwa subsequently declared a state of disaster, directing government agencies to support affected families and expedite rescue and recovery efforts.
Uncertainty Over Passenger Numbers
Authorities have yet to establish the exact number of people aboard the vessel at the time of the accident. Initial reports indicated about 95 passengers, including 90 passengers and five crew members. However, the ZRP later revised this estimate to approximately 120 individuals, comprising 108 adults and 12 children, while noting the final count could be higher.
Background and Safety Concerns
Boat mishaps on Lake Kariba are not uncommon, with several incidents reported over the past year raising safety concerns:
- In November 2025, eight tourists escaped unharmed when a houseboat capsized during a storm.
- Earlier in 2025, two fishermen died after their boat capsized following a hippopotamus encounter.
- In June, a fisherman died when strong winds overturned his boat.
- In March, one fisherman went missing after a two-person vessel capsized in a storm.
