Legal representatives of Mukurwe-ini MP John Kaguchia have been denied access to their client at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters in Nairobi.
The MP was arrested on August 3 at the Citizen TV studios, where he had spent the night following a public rally in Kieni, Nyeri County.
Lawyers Barred from Visiting
Advocate Ndegwa Njiru revealed that DCI's Deputy Director of Operations, Mr. Bett, issued explicit instructions preventing Kaguchia's lawyers from meeting him. Njiru and fellow advocate Wakili Muriu were stopped at the DCI reception, while other legal team members were blocked at the main entrance.
"We have not been allowed to see our client, Hon. Kaguchia," Njiru stated on social media, expressing frustration over the lack of communication.
Uncertainty Over MP's Status
The legal team remains uninformed about Kaguchia's whereabouts, the reasons for his arrest, or his current condition. His phone has been confiscated, and family members have also been denied contact.
Njiru emphasized that they are awaiting official confirmation from the DCI regarding Kaguchia's detention status and location within the facility.
Context of the Arrest
Kaguchia was reportedly detained over statements made at a Kieni rally, which he claims were misrepresented. He accused government digital strategist Dennis Itumbi and some Mt Kenya legislators of twisting his remarks.
According to Itumbi, Kaguchia allegedly threatened to monitor supporters of President William Ruto, keep records of them, and deny them community support such as burial rites. Kaguchia insists his comments were taken out of context.
