Christopher Nolan's latest film, The Odyssey, was illegally shared on social media platform X, attracting more than two million views within hours.
According to Variety, a high-resolution copy of the three-hour movie was embedded in a tweet on Saturday, amassing 2.1 million views in just two and a half hours before the account was suspended. Users expressed surprise and disbelief over the leak, with one commenting, "The full Odyssey movie in a tweet, as Nolan intended."
Nolan filmed The Odyssey entirely on 70mm film, a format designed for large-scale IMAX screens to maximize visual impact. The unauthorized post offered viewers a high-definition version of the movie, which is unusual considering the director’s emphasis on the theatrical experience.
The Hollywood Reporter noted that a lower-quality version appeared on X on Sunday but was removed after nearly 50,000 views within two hours.
Universal Pictures, the studio behind the film, responded promptly, stating:
- "We became aware of the unauthorised posting of the film and immediately initiated takedown protocols."
- "We take copyright infringement seriously and will pursue all appropriate remedies to protect our content and intellectual property rights."
Despite the leak, industry analysts believe the film’s box office performance remains strong. The Odyssey grossed $215 million worldwide during its second weekend, bringing its total earnings to $640 million.
