Organisers of the Linda Mwananchi movement have officially informed the police about their planned rally scheduled for August 16 in Homa Bay county. This notification allows security agencies to prepare adequately for the event.
On Tuesday afternoon, the organisers met with the Homa Bay county police commander and submitted a written notice as mandated by the Public Order Act, which requires notification to the National Police Service between three and fourteen days before public gatherings.
Following the submission, the police commander acknowledged receipt of the notification and assured organisers that necessary security arrangements would be put in place to maintain peace during the rally.
One organiser emphasized the importance of peaceful conduct, urging supporters to avoid any disruptive behaviour. "We guarantee a peaceful rally and urge all genuine supporters of Linda Mwananchi to act responsibly," they said.
Political Context and Call for Tolerance
The rally is set in Homa Bay, a stronghold of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). The county is led by Governor Gladys Wanga, who also serves as the ODM national chairperson and backs the current broad-based government coalition.
Given the political landscape, organisers appealed for tolerance, highlighting concerns about potential tensions between rival groups. They described the event as an opportunity to unveil the movement's future plans.
"We intend to make a major announcement regarding our future direction. We pray the event remains peaceful," an official stated.
Warning Against Disruption
The organisers cautioned against any attempts to disrupt the rally, referencing past incidents where political events faced interruptions. They indicated awareness of individuals who might seek to cause disturbances.
"We acknowledge that some may try to disrupt the gathering, but we welcome all attendees and expect a peaceful atmosphere," the official added.
The movement affirmed it has complied with all legal requirements and called on supporters, political stakeholders, and residents to uphold peace throughout the event.
