The Luhya Elders Forum has officially endorsed Edwin Sifuna, leader of the Linda Wananchi Movement, as the opposition’s preferred candidate for the presidency in the upcoming 2027 general election.

During a press briefing held on Sunday, August 2, 2026, the elders highlighted Sifuna’s leadership qualities and growing national appeal, emphasizing the need for support from both the Luhya community and opposition parties nationwide.

Call for Opposition Unity

Noah Wekesa, the forum’s Deputy Chairperson, stated that Sifuna’s acceptance among Kenyans justifies their backing. He urged opposition leaders to unite behind a single candidate to effectively challenge President William Ruto.

Peter Ludava, the forum’s Secretary General, described Sifuna’s political rise as organic and predicted continued growth in support, anticipating that other opposition figures may eventually rally behind him.

Sifuna’s Outreach in Western Kenya

The endorsement follows Sifuna’s recent political tour across Western Kenya counties including Kakamega, Bungoma, Vihiga, and Busia. The tour attracted large crowds of youth, professionals, and local leaders, signaling strong grassroots support.

During the tour, Sifuna emphasized the importance of opposition cohesion, economic reforms, and government accountability, while calling on Western Kenya leaders to unite behind a national agenda.

The positive reception in the region appears to have reinforced Sifuna’s standing within parts of the Luhya community, influencing the elders’ decision to publicly back him.
