The Luhya Elders Forum has officially endorsed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as their favored opposition candidate for the 2027 presidential election. The announcement was made during a press briefing in Kakamega, led by the forum's deputy chairman, Noah Wekesa.
Wekesa highlighted Sifuna's ability to garner support beyond Western Kenya, noting visits to nearly 17 counties where he attracted large crowds from diverse demographics. "Our son Edwin Sifuna has been accepted by many Kenyans, and since he is our son, we naturally want to support his political ambitions," Wekesa stated.
The forum gathered to install a new chairman following the passing of former leader Patrick Wangamati, with veteran politician Burudi Nabwera appointed to the role. While affirming their backing of Sifuna, the elders acknowledged the presence of other opposition figures and urged Sifuna to collaborate with them to unify the opposition.
"We recognize he is not alone in the opposition. He should engage with other leaders and agree on a way forward," Wekesa added. The elders expressed confidence that Sifuna would eventually gain broader opposition support.
Separately, Vihiga elders also withdrew their support from ODM, aligning with Sifuna's Linda Mwananchi movement. Led by Fred Omido, they praised Sifuna's courage and dedication to ordinary Kenyans, emphasizing the need for fearless leadership in Western Kenya.
The elders criticized ODM for straying from its foundational principles after Sifuna's removal as Secretary-General, a move Sifuna has legally challenged as unconstitutional. They believe the change has increased his popularity in the region.
Currently, Sifuna is campaigning in Western Kenya counties such as Trans Nzoia and Bungoma, positioning himself as a strong contender against established regional leaders. At a recent Bungoma rally, local elders endorsed him as the voice of the Luhya community, urging residents to support the Linda Mwananchi movement through votes and resources.
