The Luhya Council of Elders has officially endorsed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as their preferred candidate for the opposition in the upcoming General Election. The announcement was made during a press briefing held in Kakamega.
Deputy chairman Noah Wekesa, speaking on behalf of the elders, highlighted Sifuna's strong leadership qualities and his growing national appeal. "Our son Edwin Sifuna has been accepted by many Kenyans across the country," Wekesa stated, emphasizing the senator's ability to attract large and diverse crowds from nearly 17 counties.
The elders convened to appoint a new chairman following the passing of former leader Patrick Wangamati in July. Veteran politician and former ambassador Burudi Nabwera was named as the new chairman of the Luhya Elders Forum.
Call for Opposition Coalition
While affirming their support for Sifuna, the elders also urged him to collaborate with other opposition leaders. "We recognize that he is not alone in the opposition. We encourage him to engage with other leaders and agree on a unified approach," Wekesa said, underscoring the importance of a consolidated opposition front to effectively challenge President William Ruto.
The elders expressed confidence that other opposition figures would eventually rally behind Sifuna as the consensus candidate. They also lamented the absence of Sifuna at the meeting, noting they would have personally blessed his political ambitions.
