The Luhya Council of Elders has officially endorsed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna's bid for the presidency under the United Opposition banner, highlighting his widespread appeal beyond the Western region.
Speaking during a recent forum, Vice Chair Noah Wekesa emphasized that the elders fully support Sifuna's political ambitions, noting that the senator has successfully engaged with Kenyans across nearly 17 counties, drawing large and diverse crowds.
"Our son Edwin Sifuna has gained acceptance from many Kenyans nationwide. As his community elders, we clearly back his efforts to contest for the country's top seat," Wekesa stated. He added that Sifuna's outreach efforts have attracted support from young people, elders, and marginalized groups alike.
Wekesa also acknowledged the competitive nature of the opposition field, encouraging Sifuna to collaborate with other opposition leaders. "We urge him to join forces with fellow political figures and collectively work towards new leadership for Kenya," he said.
On July 28, Senator Sifuna indicated his openness to becoming a presidential candidate if it emerges as a collective decision by Kenyans. He highlighted the Linda Mwananchi movement's evolution into a significant political force through extensive public engagement across the country.
"We are seriously considering fielding a presidential candidate, a decision that will be made collectively and not unilaterally," Sifuna said. The movement has toured 16 counties and plans to reach all parts of Kenya before finalizing its political direction.
He stressed that any candidate representing Linda Mwananchi would reflect the people's choice, underscoring the movement's commitment to broad consultation and inclusivity.
