Nairobi residents are experiencing unusually cold weather this August, a phenomenon linked to the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), a large-scale atmospheric pattern affecting Equatorial Africa and the Indian Ocean.
Weather analyst Maithya wa Vilivū explained that the MJO has increased cloud cover over the Nairobi Metropolitan Area and surrounding highlands, reinforcing cool conditions. This cloudiness blocks sunlight, while cool south-easterly winds maintain low temperatures throughout the day.
What is the Madden-Julian Oscillation?
The MJO is a tropical weather system that moves eastward every 30 to 60 days, influencing rainfall, cloud formation, and wind patterns. When it passes over Equatorial Africa, it triggers extensive cloud cover that reduces daytime warming.
Weather Outlook for Nairobi
- Monday and Tuesday are forecasted as the coldest days, with thick clouds limiting sunshine.
- A brief warm-up is expected on Wednesday before temperatures drop again later in the week.
- Saturday should see warmer conditions, followed by another dip on Sunday.
The Kenya Meteorological Service notes that while the country is gradually exiting the cold season, Nairobi and neighboring counties will continue to experience cool, cloudy days with intermittent light rains and fog.
Nighttime temperatures in highland areas, including Nairobi, are expected to remain low, often below 10°C, with daytime highs around 27°C and lows near 11°C.
