The Kahawa Law Courts has convicted Ibrahim Hussein Hassan on seven terrorism-related charges after the prosecution established his membership in the banned Al-Shabaab terrorist group.
According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), Hassan was found guilty under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2012. The charges include membership in a terrorist group, gathering information linked to terrorism, and possession of items connected to terrorist activities.
Principal Magistrate Gideon Kiage ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt. Evidence showed Hassan was identified as an Al-Shabaab member on September 6, 2022, in Eastleigh Section III, Nairobi County.
A forensic examination of Hassan’s mobile phone revealed three videos containing extremist propaganda aimed at recruitment and radicalisation. The court inferred that possession of such material indicated Hassan's association with the terrorist group.
In addition to the main charge, Hassan was convicted on three counts of collecting information related to terrorism and three counts of possessing articles linked to terrorist acts.
The prosecution presented testimony from 10 witnesses during the trial, led by Principal Prosecution Counsel Kennedy Amwayi and assisted by Fatuma Ahmed.
The sentencing hearing is scheduled for July 29, 2026.
