Veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has revealed that he is very likely to retire following the conclusion of the 2026/27 season. The 40-year-old Bayern Munich captain made the announcement during a training camp in southern Bavaria.
Neuer, who signed a one-year contract extension in May, explained that the strength and potential of the current Bayern squad motivated him to continue playing for another season. "In 85 percent of cases, I probably would have retired, but being part of this squad — along with the staff and coaching team — is just fun," he said.
Neuer has been a key figure in Bayern Munich's recent successes, including their Bundesliga and German Cup double in the 2025-26 season. Despite battling muscle injuries last season, he remained an influential presence, although he missed several games and the German Cup final due to fitness issues.
Looking ahead, Neuer emphasized that he does not intend to treat the upcoming season as a farewell tour. "I'm not playing these matches just to say, 'This is my last game.' It doesn't matter if I might have visited a particular stadium for the last time," he noted.
The 2014 World Cup winner retired from international football after Euro 2024 but briefly returned for the recent World Cup, where Germany exited early. Neuer joined Bayern Munich from Schalke in 2011 and has since won 13 Bundesliga titles, six German Cups, and two Champions League trophies.
