Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has been inducted into the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition’s highest decision-making body as the opposition alliance rolls out significant leadership and structural reforms.

The changes were unveiled following a high-level meeting of the Azimio Council on Monday, August 3, 2026, aimed at fortifying the coalition ahead of the 2027 General Election.

New Members Join National Council

Alongside Matiang’i, former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya and ex-Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti were admitted as new members of the coalition’s National Council, expanding the coalition's top leadership team.

Azimio Secretary-General Caroli Omondi confirmed the appointments, highlighting the coalition’s intent to strengthen decision-making structures.

Leadership Appointments and Parliamentary Changes

  • Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka was ratified as Azimio’s official party leader.
  • Philip Kisia, former Nairobi Town Clerk, was appointed Executive Director of the coalition.
  • Caroli Omondi was confirmed as the Minority Leader in the National Assembly, replacing Junet Mohamed, signaling a shift in parliamentary leadership.

Coalition Rebranding and Expansion

The council resolved to advance a comprehensive rebranding of Azimio, a strategy under discussion since 2024, with the aim of broadening the coalition’s appeal and unity.

Efforts to invite additional parties include formally welcoming founding affiliate DAP-Kenya back into the fold, with party leader Eugene Wamalwa confirming the initiation of internal processes for rejoining.

Other parties invited to join, pending their internal approvals, are Umoja na Maendeleo Party, PDP Party, and the Democratic Party.

Strategic Moves Ahead of 2027

The latest restructuring follows earlier efforts by former President Uhuru Kenyatta in July to replace officials who had joined the Kenya Kwanza administration with leaders committed to the opposition.

These developments come after a recent strategy meeting chaired by Kalonzo Musyoka, involving senior figures such as Omondi, Kisia, and David Murathe, focusing on Azimio’s future direction.

With Matiang’i’s inclusion, the coalition’s rebranding push, the return of DAP-Kenya, and the recruitment of new affiliates, Azimio is positioning itself for a unified and strengthened front as the 2027 elections approach.
