Overview of Mbooni Girls High School

Located atop Mbooni Hills in Makueni County, St. Therese Mbooni Girls High School is the only national girls' boarding school in the county. It was elevated to national status in 2011 and admitted its first national class in 2012. The school has an enrolment of roughly 900 students and is recognized for excellent academic performance and robust infrastructure.

History and Vision

Originally established in 1960 as a teacher training college for young women under the Mercy Sisters of Dublin, the institution transitioned into a secondary school by 1970. It phased out the 'A' level stream in 1989 following Kenya's adoption of the 8-4-4 education system. The school operates under the motto "Education is Treasure," aiming to empower the girl child through quality education in a secure environment.

Location and Accessibility

The school is situated approximately 33 km from Wote and 37 km from Machakos, near Kikima town. Its elevated position offers scenic views, including a glimpse of Mt. Kilimanjaro in the early morning hours.

Fees Structure

Classified as a Cluster Two national school by the Ministry of Education, Mbooni Girls charges an annual fee capped at about Ksh 75,798 per student. Additional expenses may include uniforms, co-curricular activities, meals, transportation, and exam registration fees. The Board of Management may adjust fees within Ministry guidelines.

Academic Performance

Mbooni Girls consistently ranks among Kenya's top 100 schools in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams. In 2024, 205 candidates sat for the KCSE, achieving a mean score of 9.40 with 96.6% qualifying for university admission. This performance is comparable to the 2023 results, which had a mean score of 9.532 and a 96.5% university pass rate.

Admission Criteria

Admission to Form One is merit-based, requiring candidates to have scored at least 400 marks in the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), formerly KCPE. The Ministry of Education oversees the selection process, ensuring adherence to Affirmative Action and regional balance policies. Prospective students must list Mbooni Girls as their preferred school during the KPSEA registration.
