Construction of the Moi Stadium upgrade in Kisumu has reached 20 percent completion, with the government aiming to finish by December 2026 in time for the Jamhuri Day celebrations.

The facility, closed since January for renovations, is being transformed into a modern sports complex featuring a 10,000-seat capacity. The project began in April following demolition of the old structures.

Principal Secretary for Defence Patrick Mariru, during an inspection, highlighted key components of the upgrade:

  • Improved spectator stands and amenities
  • A football pitch meeting FIFA and CAF standards
  • An eight-lane athletics track built to international specifications

Significant progress includes casting of bases and columns for the main dais at the Western Pavilion, with the main concrete frame expected to be completed by the end of October.

Mariru emphasized the tight timeline to ensure readiness for the December deadline, which will mark the stadium's return as a major venue for football, athletics, and other sporting events in Kisumu.

Following the Moi Stadium inspection, Mariru also launched upgrading works at Gusii Stadium, which will have a 14,000-seat capacity once complete. Both projects are part of nationwide efforts to modernize sports infrastructure and expand access to quality venues for local communities.
