Morocco and Algeria have both qualified for the quarter-finals of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) following their performances in Group A matches held in Rabat.
Morocco topped the group with seven points despite a goalless draw against Senegal. The Atlas Lionesses had opportunities to score from two penalty kicks during the match, but both attempts were brilliantly saved by Senegal's goalkeeper Adji Ndiaye. Earlier in the group stage, Morocco secured wins over Kenya and Algeria.
Algeria finished second in the group with six points after a 2-0 victory over Kenya. Goals from Marine Dafeur, who scored a free-kick from outside the area, and Lynda Bendris, who capitalized on a defensive error, ensured Algeria's progression to the last eight.
Senegal ended their campaign with four points, while Kenya failed to earn any points and were eliminated from the tournament.
Quarter-Final Matchups Await
The quarter-final opponents for Morocco and Algeria will be determined after the conclusion of Group B matches. Ivory Coast leads Group B with four points, followed closely by Burkina Faso and Tanzania with three points each, and South Africa with one point. All four teams still have a chance to advance.
The semi-finalists will not only compete for the WAFCON title and a record $2 million prize but will also earn qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil.
