Former Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has appealed to Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku to refrain from actions that could deepen political divisions within the Mt Kenya region. The call follows Ruku's recent defense of Deputy President Kithure Kindiki amid criticism from former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
During a public meeting in Nakuru County, Ruku dismissed Gachagua's attacks on the Kenya Kwanza government and reaffirmed the region's loyalty to President William Ruto. He described Kindiki as a committed leader who enjoys the President's confidence and contrasted this with Gachagua's tenure, which he said was marked by unmet expectations and personal grievances following his impeachment.
Responding to these developments, Kuria emphasized the importance of unity among Mt Kenya leaders ahead of the 2027 General Election. In a statement dated July 31, 2026, he warned that internal divisions could weaken the region's political influence and urged recognition of every voting bloc's significance, regardless of size.
Kuria stated:
- "Dear my brother CS Geoffrey Kiringa Ruku, I understand your frustration, but it is not a good idea to split the Mountain."
- "We need each other and every vote. Your Mbeere North Constituency, with 54,000 registered voters, is very important for us, just like Kamenu Ward in Thika Town with 58,000 registered voters, the most populous ward in Kenya."
- He concluded with a call for reconciliation: "Tupendane ndugu. Kenya ni yetu sisi sote."
Ruku also dismissed speculation about Kindiki's political future, affirming President Ruto's intention to retain him as running mate in the upcoming election. He maintained that the political tensions in Mt Kenya stem from Gachagua's personal grievances rather than a broader regional shift away from the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Kuria's intervention presents a conciliatory approach amid rising political rivalry in Mt Kenya, highlighting the need for solidarity as the region positions itself ahead of the 2027 polls.
