A Nairobi court has directed that Rose Mbithe Mulwa and her son Chris Mulwa remain in custody for 21 days while investigations into the murder of clinical psychologist Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso continue.
The magistrate expressed concern over the possibility of witness tampering if the two suspects were released. Rose Mulwa will be held at Kileleshwa Police Station, while Chris Mulwa will be detained at Kilimani Police Station.
Background of the Case
Dr Mutiso was fatally shot in Upper Hill while travelling in a taxi, 24 days after reporting threats to her life at Kilimani Police Station. According to police affidavits, Dr Mutiso had previously reported two separate incidents where men on a motorcycle allegedly followed and threatened her. On July 7, 2026, near Junction Mall on Ngong Road, two men on a motorcycle reportedly drew a gun on her. She escaped unharmed and identified the pillion passenger as Chris Mulwa.
The prosecution alleges that Rose Mbithe Mulwa is the former wife of Dr Mutiso’s husband, Prof David Musyimi Ndetei. The couple divorced in 2001 and have four children, including Chris Mulwa.
Investigation Developments
- The court granted a 21-day remand, less than the 30 days initially requested by the prosecution, to allow detectives to continue gathering evidence.
- The suspects were arrested in Karen during an intelligence-led operation last Thursday.
- Investigators are exploring possible links between Dr Mutiso’s murder and that of lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu, who was killed in September 2025. Mbobu had represented Prof Ndetei in a prolonged property dispute with Rose Mulwa.
- Both victims were reportedly followed before being shot, suggesting potential connections between the two cases.
Autopsy Findings
Chief government pathologist Johansen Oduor’s autopsy revealed that Dr Mutiso was shot three times—twice in the head and once in the upper body—resulting in severe bleeding and fatal injuries to her chest and head.
