Mount Kigali University (MKUR) has made history by winning the inaugural Rwanda Varsity League Football Championship for the 2025–2026 season, completing a flawless unbeaten campaign.
The team secured the title after a dominant 3-0 win against East African University Rwanda (EAUR) in the national final held at Kamena Stadium, Huye, on June 28, 2026.
Celebrations and Recognition
The triumphant squad was welcomed by MKUR Founder and Chairman, Prof. Simon Gicharu, in a ceremony attended by university officials, staff, students, and supporters. Prof. Gicharu praised the players for their discipline, teamwork, and commitment, emphasizing the importance of fostering student talent beyond academics.
He encouraged the athletes to continue striving for excellence, highlighting the role of sports in personal growth, career development, and national pride. The team was also commended for exemplifying the university's values through their exemplary sportsmanship.
Institutional Pride and Future Ambitions
Vice-Chancellor Dr. Martin Kimemia described the victory as a landmark moment for MKUR, attributing the unbeaten run to the unity and dedication of the players, coaching staff, and supporters. He acknowledged the university community's unwavering support and noted that this achievement sets a strong foundation for the growth of sports at MKUR.
Team captain Mbanza Joshua expressed pride in leading the side to the title and thanked university leadership for investing in sports facilities and enabling a balance between academics and athletics. He expressed aspirations to compete in the East African Inter-Universities Championship and called for increased support through scholarships and more competitive matches.
Looking Ahead
Following the celebrations, Prof. Simon Gicharu hosted the team for a dinner at Kigali Paramount Hotel, commending their humility and dedication. MKUR now shifts focus to representing Rwanda at the East African Inter-Universities Championship in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, scheduled for December 2026.
The university is confident the team will build on its domestic success and perform strongly against top university football teams across East Africa.
