Kieni MP John Philip Gichohi Kaguchia has entered a plea of not guilty to charges of offensive conduct likely to disturb the peace. The charge, authorized by the Director of Public Prosecutions, stems from remarks he allegedly made targeting supporters of President William Ruto.
The incident is reported to have occurred on August 1, 2026, at Naromoru Shopping Centre in Kieni East Sub-County, Nyeri County. Kaguchia is accused of intentionally uttering provocative statements in the Kikuyu language that could incite hostility and social division.
According to the charge sheet, the MP allegedly warned that anyone in Kieni who voted for or supported President Ruto, whom he reportedly referred to as "Kasongo," would face social isolation. This included threats of boycotting bereavement visits, dowry ceremonies, and advising supporters to seek medical treatment outside the area.
During his court appearance, Kaguchia denied all allegations. He was granted release on a cash bail of KSh100,000 pending the case's hearing and determination.
Political Reactions
The arrest and arraignment of Kaguchia have stirred political debate. Some leaders aligned with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua condemned the proceedings, labeling them politically motivated. Notably, UDA MP Antony Kagombe expressed discontent, hinting at a possible shift towards Gachagua's Wamunyoro movement.
