Mukurwe-ini Member of Parliament John Kaguchia expressed determination to continue his political work following his arrest and overnight detention at Kamukunji Police Station.
On Tuesday morning, Kaguchia took to social media to affirm that the experience had only strengthened his commitment to justice. He stated, "A night in the police cell has only strengthened our resolve and commitment to justice. Today, we soldier on!"
The MP was arrested on Monday after leaving a television interview at Royal Media Services, where he had spent some time amid concerns that detectives were waiting to detain him over comments he made on political matters.
Initially held at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters, Kaguchia was later transferred to Kamukunji Police Station where he spent the night. His legal team reported they had not been formally informed of the charges against him and raised concerns over restricted access to him and the confiscation of his phone.
By Tuesday morning, authorities had not publicly disclosed any charges Kaguchia might face. Meanwhile, demonstrations erupted in parts of Mukurwe-ini Constituency as his supporters demanded his immediate release, claiming the arrest was politically motivated.
Prominent political figures, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, condemned the detention. Gachagua noted that the arrest would elevate Kaguchia's political profile and confirmed that the High Court had ordered his release upon payment of a Sh100,000 police cash bail.
In a statement, Gachagua accused Kamukunji Police officers of ignoring the court order despite it being served and warned them against contempt of court, urging compliance with the directive.
The case has intensified political debate over selective law enforcement targeting politicians based on their affiliations, with calls for equal application of the law to all Kenyans.
Kaguchia is scheduled for arraignment at Milimani Law Courts at 8:30 am on Tuesday as the legal process unfolds.
