Mt Kenya East Elders to Officially Separate from Mt Kenya West Over Political Differences

Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku has revealed that the Mount Kenya East region will formally pursue an independent political path, separating from Mount Kenya West due to conflicting economic and political interests.

Speaking on Kameme TV on August 3, 2026, Ruku attributed the decision to a shift in regional political loyalties following President William Ruto's appointment of Kithure Kindiki as Deputy President. Contrary to expectations, leaders and residents of Mount Kenya West have increasingly rallied under the 'Wantam' slogan, signaling opposition to the Kenya Kwanza administration.

"When Kindiki became Deputy President, instead of Mount Kenya West continuing its support for the government, they started chanting 'Wantam' daily," Ruku explained. He added that the government appears favored when leaders hail from the western side of Mount Kenya but is viewed unfavorably when they come from the east.

Formal Separation Process

Ruku announced that elders from Meru, Embu, Kirinyaga, and Tharaka Nithi counties will meet later this month to discuss the region’s political future. They intend to issue a formal declaration confirming Mount Kenya East's political and economic disassociation from Mount Kenya West.

"On behalf of Mount Kenya East, we have decided to disassociate politically and economically from Mount Kenya West," Ruku stated, noting the historical unity between the two regions has given way to divergent interests.

Addressing Development Imbalances

Ruku has also been advocating for special political and development considerations for Mount Kenya East, highlighting decades of unequal development compared to the western counties. In a July 27 interview, he refuted claims that he was sent by President Ruto to divide the region's vote-rich population.

"I am not splitting the mountain; I am merely stating the realities faced by the region," he emphasized.

This announcement comes amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election, as regional leaders seek to solidify their support bases.
