On Tuesday, August 4, a multi-vehicle accident involving two trucks and a private car brought traffic to a standstill on the Mai Mahiu Escarpment Road. The collision occurred near a sharp bend, resulting in significant damage and a complete blockage of both lanes.
Witnesses reported the incident, and videos shared with Kenyans.co.ke reveal one truck lying on its side atop a Toyota Premio, with its front cabin severely damaged. The other truck was ascending the hill at the time of the crash. Several individuals were seen trapped in the wreckage as bystanders attempted rescue efforts. At this time, authorities have not confirmed any casualties.
Traffic Disruptions and Alternative Routes
The accident has caused extensive traffic congestion, forcing motorists to seek alternative pathways. Recommended detours include:
- The Nairobi-Kinangop-Naivasha route via the upper Nakuru Highway passing through Limuru, Kimende, and Njabini, though traffic on this route is increasing.
- The Suswa-Ewaso Kedong-Ngong Road link, which remains clear for light vehicles.
- The Kijabe Road, suitable for small personal vehicles but currently experiencing heavy congestion.
- For travelers heading towards Western Kenya, Nyanza, and the North Rift, alternate corridors include the Nyeri-Nyahururu-Nakuru route or the Thika-Magumu-Njabini-Olkalou-Dundori-Lanet road.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident. Motorists are advised to exercise caution and consider these alternative routes until the road is cleared.
