In a tragic incident in Murang'a County, a couple was found dead just hours after moving in together on August 9, 2026. Patrick Mwangi, 28, a motorcycle taxi rider, and Jackline Wambui, 25, who did occasional manual jobs, had been in a relationship for about three years prior to their cohabitation.
They arrived at their new home in Nyerere village around 4 pm, but by 7:30 pm both were deceased. Murang'a County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo confirmed that the deaths are under active investigation. Initial findings suggest a possible murder-suicide, but authorities remain open to other possibilities pending further evidence.
The bodies were taken to Maragua Level Four Hospital mortuary. According to Mwangi's mother, Bilha Wangare, their relationship was marked by intense passion but also frequent disputes over finances, mobile phones, and lifestyle choices. Wangare described their bond as "foolish lovers" due to the volatility.
Among the conflicts were accusations of theft and disagreements about financial support to Mwangi's parents. Wambui also insisted on transferring ownership of Mwangi's motorcycle and a small plot of land to her name before moving in. A reconciliation meeting was held on August 4, where compromises were made, including Mwangi agreeing to start a business for Wambui and her agreeing to try to conceive a child.
On the day of the move, Wambui appeared tired and possibly intoxicated upon arrival. Shortly after, Mwangi bid farewell to his mother, revealing that Wambui had sent him a photo of another man, threatening to leave him if not treated well. Moments later, Wangare discovered Mwangi hanging behind their house, and Wambui was later found dead inside their home.
Wambui's family expressed deep sorrow, with her aunt noting that Wambui had intended to marry Mwangi but their union lasted only a few hours. She leaves behind a five-year-old daughter.
