Murang’a County has emerged as the top performer in healthcare services in the 2026 CountyTrak Performance Index conducted by Infotrak. The county achieved a health score of 56%, placing it six points ahead of Elgeyo Marakwet and West Pokot, which tied for second place with 50% each.
Kiambu and Tharaka Nithi followed closely, sharing fourth place with 49%. Other notable performers included Kisii and Homa Bay at 48%, and Trans Nzoia at 47%. Kericho, Uasin Gishu, Makueni, and Kisumu each scored 46%, while Nandi and Samburu recorded 45%.
Biggest Movers and Trends
- Nandi County made the most significant progress, jumping 29 places from 42nd in 2024 to 13th in 2026, marking the largest health sector improvement among all counties.
- Garissa climbed 27 places, moving from 42nd to 15th position.
- Kericho entered the top 10, rising 20 places to ninth.
- Machakos and Wajir also posted notable gains, moving up 18 and 18 places respectively.
The national average health score stood at 42.5%, indicating healthcare remains one of the lower-rated devolved functions across counties. The index is based on residents’ perceptions of county governments’ delivery of health services, including affordability, availability of medical personnel and equipment, handling of health concerns, disease prevention information, and sanitation facilities.
Murang’a’s rise to the top reflects continuous improvement, increasing from 52% in 2023 and 2024 to 56% in the latest survey. The county is the only one in the top five to improve its score in every survey cycle.
Survey Methodology
The CountyTrak survey was conducted between January and May 2026, covering all 47 counties, 290 constituencies, and 1,450 wards. A total of 36,200 respondents participated through computer-assisted telephone interviews. Responses were rated on a scale of one to 10 and analyzed using SPSS software to generate robust ward-level statistics on county government performance in devolved functions.
