Murang’a County has been ranked as Kenya’s best-performing county in the 2026 CountyTrak Performance Index, according to a survey released by Infotrak Research and Consulting on August 4, 2026.
The index, which evaluates public perception of county governments’ delivery of devolved services, placed Murang’a first with an overall score of 54%, narrowly ahead of Kiambu at 52% and Trans Nzoia at 50%.
Top Performers Across Counties
- Murang’a led the overall rankings, with Elgeyo Marakwet, Homa Bay, Kisii, and Uasin Gishu tied for fourth at 49%.
- Makueni and Tharaka Nithi held eighth place with 48%, while Kericho, Kisumu, and Nyeri shared 10th position scoring 47%.
- Several counties including Embu, Kirinyaga, Kwale, and Nandi tied at 13th with 46%, while Bungoma, Kilifi, Mombasa, and Samburu were placed 19th at 45%.
- Lamu, Machakos, Migori, Nakuru, and Narok rounded out the top 25 counties with 44% each.
Sector-Specific Highlights
- Agriculture: Trans Nzoia topped this sector with 60%, followed by Murang’a (56%) and Kiambu (55%). The national average was 44.4%.
- Social Services: Murang’a led with 52%, with Homa Bay close behind at 50%. The sector’s mean score was 43.4%.
- Housing, Lands and Settlement: Murang’a also ranked first at 53%, ahead of Kiambu’s 51%. The national average stood at 42.7%.
- Culture and Sports: Murang’a maintained the lead with 51%, followed by Kisii and Homa Bay at 49%. The sector’s mean score was 43.3%.
- Environment and Natural Resources: Murang’a and Trans Nzoia shared the top spot with 55%, with Makueni close behind at 54%. The national average was 47.9%.
- Energy: Kiambu led with 56%, followed by Murang’a at 54%. The sector averaged 44.6% nationally.
