Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has surged to the top of the 2026 Governor Performance Index, according to recent data released by Infotrak. Kang’ata’s approval rating rose sharply to 80 percent, up from 68 percent in 2024 and 64 percent in 2023, elevating him from fourth place three years ago to first this year.
Trans-Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, who led the rankings in 2023 with a 70 percent approval rating, now holds second place with 76 percent after a dip to 64 percent in 2024.
Notable Climbers in the Rankings
- Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi made the most significant leap, jumping from 29th place in 2023 to third in 2026, with his approval rating increasing from 54 percent to 71 percent.
- Homa Bay’s Gladys Wanga and Makueni’s Mutula Kilonzo Jr share fourth place, each with 66 percent approval.
- A three-way tie for sixth includes Elgeyo Marakwet’s Wesley Rotich, Kisumu’s Anyang’ Nyong’o, and West Pokot’s Simon Kachapin, all at 65 percent.
- Kisii’s Simba Arati and Samburu’s Jonathan Lelelit are tied for ninth with 63 percent approval. Lelelit notably advanced from 15th place in 2024 with a 49 percent rating to the top 10 this year.
Northern Kenya Governors Show Strong Gains
Mandera Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif recorded the largest improvement nationally, climbing 17 places from 32nd in 2024 to 15th in 2026. Wajir’s Ahmed Abdullahi and Garissa’s Nathif Jama also posted remarkable gains, moving up 16 and 14 places respectively. These three North Eastern governors top the list of most improved leaders.
