Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has unveiled plans to boost operational funds for chiefs and assistant chiefs while introducing digital literacy and leadership training for village elders nationwide.
Addressing village elders at State House, Nairobi, during a meeting convened by President William Ruto, Murkomen highlighted that training for chiefs and assistant chiefs has been completed and promotions are underway.
Increased Allocations
- Assistant chiefs will receive between Sh15,000 and Sh30,000 in operational funds.
- Chiefs' allocations will be raised from Sh30,000 to Sh50,000 in the current budget cycle.
Digital Literacy and Leadership Training
The government plans to equip village elders with digital skills and leadership capabilities to enhance their service delivery and engagement within communities.
Security Enhancements
- The National Government Administration Police Unit (NGAPU) is being rolled out, with 16 sub-counties already staffed with officers.
- About 60,000 police officers are expected to graduate soon, strengthening security across sub-counties.
- Additional anti-narcotics officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) will be deployed nationwide.
Role of Elders Ahead of 2027 Elections
Murkomen urged elders to actively combat tribalism, political incitement, and youth involvement in election-related violence. He called on them to champion national unity and uphold constitutional values, warning against politicians who seek to divide communities along ethnic or political lines.
He emphasized collaboration between elders and security agencies to address emerging security challenges linked to political activities.
