Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has publicly condemned former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for allegedly making false claims about possessing classified intelligence information. Murkomen accused Gachagua of using national security issues for political maneuvering, warning all politicians against exploiting Kenya's safety for political gain.
Warning to Politicians
Speaking at a church service on August 2, 2026, Murkomen emphasized that security matters should not be politicized by either government or opposition leaders. He criticized those who claim to have insider information from agencies such as the National Intelligence Service (NIS) and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), suggesting these claims are mere attempts to appear influential within security circles.
Direct Criticism of Gachagua
Murkomen singled out Gachagua as the "most irresponsible leader" to have held office since independence in 1963. He contrasted Gachagua's conduct with other senior leaders, including Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, noting their respect for security institutions. Murkomen expressed disbelief that Gachagua had ever served on Kenya's Security Council, condemning his disparagement of the security sector.
Disputing Claims of Prior Intelligence
Gachagua had recently claimed to have received advance intelligence on President William Ruto's plans. Murkomen dismissed this, pointing out that the Vision 2060 report was officially presented to senior officials, including the President, at State House on July 21, 2026. He added that the President had already announced intentions regarding Kenya’s future on social media prior to the report's public launch.
Murkomen accused Gachagua of fabricating stories to create an illusion of inside knowledge and running a "clandestine security sector." He further questioned Gachagua’s development agenda, suggesting the former deputy president focuses more on attacking other leaders than proposing constructive policies.
