Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has revealed that President William Ruto’s maize farm in the North Rift region is expected to produce no harvest this season, reflecting the widespread agricultural difficulties affecting the area.
Addressing congregants at ACK St Stephen's Church in Chepkoilel on Sunday, Murkomen highlighted the severe impact of poor weather and farming conditions that have led to losses for many farmers, including the President.
“I passed by your farm and saw that you won't harvest anything this year. I was upset, but when I realised even the President is facing losses, I understood that many Kenyans are struggling,” Murkomen said.
The CS emphasized that the challenges confronting President Ruto’s farm mirror those faced by numerous farmers across the region.
Despite the bleak outlook for this season’s harvest, Murkomen commended government efforts under President Ruto’s leadership to reduce the cost of subsidized fertilizer, which has eased some financial burdens on farmers.
- Fertilizer prices were lowered from Sh7,000 to Sh2,500 per bag after President Ruto assumed office.
- These subsidy adjustments have contributed positively to the local economy despite current farming setbacks.
Murkomen’s remarks come amid ongoing difficulties for farmers in various parts of Kenya, who continue to battle unfavorable climatic conditions affecting crop production.
The government maintains that its interventions, including affordable fertilizer, remain key to supporting farmers and stabilizing the agricultural sector during challenging seasons.
