Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has emphasized the crucial role of elders in combating tribalism, political incitement, and the manipulation of youth in election-related violence.

Speaking during a meeting at State House, Nairobi, between President William Ruto and village elders, Murkomen urged community leaders to champion national unity as Kenya prepares for the 2027 General Election.

Call for Unity and Constitutional Values

Murkomen appealed to elders to reject politicians who promote ethnic and political divisions. He stressed the responsibility of elders to uphold the values and principles enshrined in the Kenyan Constitution.

"Let us reject all those who are preaching tribalism, dividing the people, spreading hatred," Murkomen said. "We must ensure we are promoting values and principles of our Constitution. I request you, our elders, to become the cornerstone of the unity of our republic and shun politics and leaders that spread division and tribalism."

Engagement with Security Agencies and Youth

The Cabinet Secretary also called on elders to collaborate closely with security agencies to address the issue of youth being used as instruments of political violence.

"I also want to ask elders to work closely with the police to rein on those leaders using our young boys as goons to spread fear and for their own selfish political gains," he stated.

He further urged elders to engage young people, guiding them away from violence and political manipulation.

"You must also talk to the youth and give them proper advice," Murkomen added.

Context of Rising Political Tensions

The meeting at State House, which included President Ruto and community representatives nationwide, is part of ongoing engagements with stakeholders amid intensifying political activities ahead of the 2027 elections.

Murkomen's remarks come amid concerns over increasing political incitement, inflammatory rhetoric, and the use of social media to amplify divisive messages. There is heightened worry over political goonism as rival factions ramp up grassroots mobilization.
