Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has publicly challenged Mt Kenya residents for their lukewarm support of Deputy President Kithure Kindiki. Speaking at a fundraiser in Runyenjes, Embu County, on July 31, Murkomen questioned why the region, which strongly backed former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, appears hesitant to rally behind Kindiki.
Mt Kenya's Political Loyalty Questioned
Murkomen highlighted the political transition from Gachagua to Kindiki, noting that both leaders hail from Mt Kenya and have served as Deputy President under President William Ruto. He expressed surprise at the apparent disparity in the region's backing of the two leaders.
"We went into election and President William Ruto was elected with his deputy Rigathi Gachagua. Along the way, the deputy president got injured by his own liking. The president went ahead to find another deputy from this region," Murkomen said.
The CS challenged the notion that only Gachagua represents Mt Kenya's interests, asserting that Kindiki deserves equal support as Ruto's running mate for the 2027 elections.
Kindiki's Credentials Affirmed
Addressing doubts about Kindiki's suitability, Murkomen dismissed claims questioning his qualifications and leadership capabilities. He attributed Kindiki's political challenges primarily to a lack of unified regional backing rather than any personal shortcomings.
"Kindiki is a qualified leader who has the ability and experience to work. The only problem he might have is if the Mt Kenya people fail to stand by him," Murkomen stated.
Political Context
Murkomen's remarks come amid reports of internal tensions within the ruling coalition and suggestions that President Ruto consider alternative running mates from other regions ahead of the 2027 general election. Critics argue that Gachagua's Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) maintains strong influence over Mt Kenya's vote, potentially sidelining Kindiki.
However, Murkomen rejected this view, emphasizing that the core issue lies in the region's inconsistent political unity rather than Kindiki's leadership.
